Sink or Swim
Sink or Swim is an interactive musical experience in a swimming pool for under 5s and their families. Following on from a 6 month artistic residency with the Play Cafe at Platform, we were inspired to make a piece of work that allowed early years and their guardians to bond in a sensory, immersive, and interactive environment. Sink or Swim uses bespoke interactive sound design, live music and object manipulation and is designed to take place in training pools with one on one support for all children involved.
Sink or Swim is inspired by gig and club culture, as well as fully immersive theatre experiences, and we were interested to explore what these concepts might look like for early years. Over 6 months we facilitated and led practical workshops with the Play Cafe at Platform, which involved playing in the training pool as well as dry-site rehearsals. This process culminated in a work-in-progress as part of Made in Easterhouse and Starcatcher's 10th Birthday celebrations in September 2016. Following on from this sharing, we received a highly competitive Michael Grandage Futures Fund which has gone towards the purchase of Clark Synthesis Aquasonic underwater speakers for the next phase of development. We will be continuing to develop Sink or Swim over the next year, with support from Platform and Starcatchers.
Here are a number of images from the research and development process we did over 6 months with Play Cafe at Platform. Points of interest included:
- Transfer of liquids using different tools
- How texture and light changes within water
- How sound moves in and out of water
- Building boats together
- Using swimming moves as a basis for choreography
- Making obstacle courses for mini boat races
- Interactive sound design
